- Blog Post: Azure Appliances for Everyone? Not!In the world of Windows Azure there is a major misconception that the Azure Appliance announced at PDC10 is Microsoft’s answer to having your own Private Cloud. This is not correct. The appliance, as announced at PDC, is a turn-key cloud solution based on highly standardized, preconfigured hardware. Think of it as hundreds of servers in pre-configured racks of networking, storage, and server hardware that are based on a Microsoft-specified reference architecture. It is a turnkey cloud platform that customers can deploy in their own datacenter, across hundreds to thousands of servers. The Windows Azure platform appliance consists of Windows Azure, SQL Azure and a Microsoft-specified configuration of network, storage and server hardware. This hardware will be delivered by a variety of partners. The appliance is designed for service providers, large enterprises and governments and provides a proven cloud platform that delivers breakthrough datacenter efficiency through innovative power, cooling and automation technologies. The emphasis (in yellow) is mine. The point that I am making here is that the appliance is only for the very large. If you buy servers in blocks of hundreds or thousands it may be for you. Otherwise not. For instance the first beta customers for the appliance are eBay, Dell, Fujitsu and HP who intend to deploy the appliance in their datacenters to offer new cloud services. For the rest of us there is a Private Cloud Solution, and surprise, it has been mostly available to us all along. Built on existing Microsoft server technologies and based on Microsoft’s virtualization technology, Hyper-V Cloud, is that solution. I have blogged about this in a few other posts here, here and here so I will not go into it in detail in this post. But please do read those posts for an overview. Bill Zack

- Why Nintendo Should Return to CESThe last time Nintendo made a big appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), SquareSoft’s SNES RPG masterpiece Chrono Trigger was a major preview, and audiences murmured about the N64, Saturn, and PlayStation. Shortly thereafter, Nintendo detached itself from CES in favor of a fresh start at E3, which has served as the industry’s premier trade show ever since. In November, word got around that Nintendo would be returning as a CES exhibitor this January, and game communities fell into nostalgia-heavy discussions about the days that were. Sadly, Nintendo will only be attending CES in a very limited, private capacity: CES had mistakenly listed the company as a game exhibitor alongside Microsoft and Sony. In other words, don’t fly down to Las Vegas in hopes of trying out the Nintendo 3DS. But what if Nintendo did in fact return to CES? What if CES became the big game showcase opportunity that it once was? Granted, E3 was fashioned as an almost direct response to CES’s tendency to regulate game exhibits to the convention center’s “cheap seats,” but the industry is far bigger now, and (presumably) more respected. Wouldn’t developers and gamers alike benefit if big exhibitions were spaced out between CES and E3? E3 isn’t the only preview-centric convention in town, of course. PAX Prime and PAX East are gaining momentum, and even though Nintendo might not frequent CES, it often saves its best for the Tokyo Game Show (TGS). But E3 carries a tremendous amount of weight. Developers are still pushed to create game demos that can break them if they fail to capture interest at the show. And when every company in the industry is vying for the public’s attention, it can be almost impossible to capture a journalist’s darting eye. Even if a game is lucky enough to score a preview on a website, that preview is often buried under an avalanche of news about projects from The Big Three. Though Sony and Microsoft preview some titles at CES, the event feels hollow as a games trade show without Nintendo’s presence. Bringing Nintendo back to CES won’t completely ease the frenzy that drains developers and games writers alike every spring, but the games industry can still benefit from more prolific trade shows to help take the pressure off. Imagine if televisions, cars, and computers had every brand and manufacturer packed into one convention center for an annual circus. Why should the games industry be expected to gorge itself on one yearly show that’s too stressful to be much fun?

- Gigapan EPIC PRO Panoramic Robot [Review]Playing with this device was a delight. Let me state that from the beginning. And if you want to draw looks and questions, grab a Gigapan EPIC PRO and put it on your tripod. What is a Gigapan EPIC PRO? It’s a robot that takes gigapixel (one billion or more) photos for you. There is programming to be done first, but once all the parameters are set, the unit will pan and tilt to create proper coverage for intense panoramas. Unlike a panorama where a wide or semi-wide angle lens is used to take a few shots and stitched together in a computer, the idea with the Gigapan is to zoom in and get as much detail as you like, then stitch with their software that understands how the panorama was shot. I was lent a Gigapan by the folks at BorrowLenses.Com to take to Hawaii for some testing and this review. The Unit Heavy. Cumbersome. Awkward. Solid. Complicated. Fancy. That was my first impression of the Gigapan EPIC PRO upon opening the box and taking a look. As you can see in the pictures, the unit is sizable, and for good reason. First, it has to house a battery pack to move all the gears when you are out in the wilds. Second, those gears are precise, this is not a cheap unit by any stretch. Lastly, it has to have a large range of motion in order to capture 360 degree shots. The unit has a base, which contains the mount for a tripod, which contains the brains of the unit, accessed by an easy to read LCD. The controls for the LCD are easy enough to get accustomed to. A multi-directional controller sits in the middle, flanked on both sides by a X button and an OK/Power button. Most video game controllers are more complex than this unit. Just above all these controls is one of the most important features: a built-in bubble level. Rising from the sides of the unit are two arms which hold the camera mount. These arms are responsible for swinging the camera up and down, and have degree markings on their sides to aid in precise calculation of panoramas if you so desire. Inside of the arms is the camera mount, a somewhat complex looking arrangement at first glance. The mount is designed to be universal and will work for most any lens/camera combination less than 10lbs. The mount comes with a quick release head to make life easy and the tray the head sits in can be adjusted forward and back. Likewise, the whole tray can be raised and lowered where it attaches to the two side arms. Why all this room for adjustment? To create precise panoramas, especially when zoomed in at 300mm+, the unit needs to swivel around the center of the lens. The instructions include a process for setting the unit correctly and rather than regurgitate those step-by-step instructions here, I will summarize by stating it’s best to have the bulk of the camera weight over the center of the plate while making sure the height is set properly. One read through of the instructions is about all it takes to get the unit ready for shooting. Someone asked me, “Do you have to use a tripod with that thing?” (I should note, you will get a lot of questions when using this unit from passersby) Yes, you do. The unit turns left and right by way of the bottom mount, so it is essential that the plate is held in place. I’m sure special adaptations can be made, but a tripod, with a quick release, is the easiest route. Gigapan EPIC PRO Panoramic Robot In Use My first use of the unit was on the back deck of the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farms on the island of Maui, Hawaii. A wide expanse of the central island lay before me and I was excited to start playing, errr, testing the robot. With the camera mounted I hooked up the control cable (your camera will need to be able to accept a remote control and a full list of compatible cameras is available on GigaPan Systems’ website) and instantly my Canon 7D started shooting at its highest frame rate. Mistake number one. If the unit is off, it may trigger your camera when the control cable is first installed. Once I had regained control and turned the unit on, it was time to setup my camera. Each focal length needs to be set invididually because the field of view changes. GigaPan makes this easy with one of its menu options. Find an object once you have selected your desired focal length. Place an object near the top of your viewfinder. After clicking OK, you will then move that object to the bottom. That’s all the GigaPan needs to know! If you only use one focal length for all your panoramas, this setting will never have to be adjusted again. Now the unit is ready to start shooting! The menus will walk you through a few things you need to do first to insure solid panoramas: Manual focus – You don’t want near and far focus changing on you Manual exposure – Scan through you scene and find a good middle exposure then set it manually Flash – Turn it off ISO – Lock it down White Balance – If you’re shooting in RAW, it won’t matter, but I’d suggest setting it to a static point anyway At the beginning of setting up your new panorama, the unit will tell you to move the camera, via the cursor key, to the top left of your desired image. Then move it to the bottom right. As you have programed the field of view earlier, the unit will now tell you how many rows, columns and total photos will be taken. And if you desire, the unit can show you a dry run and pinpoint corners before actually commencing with the panorama. After that, it’s time to hit OK and the robot work its magic! Gigapan in action The Software The software that comes with the unit is simple and in its first version. In my view, it has a lot to improve upon, but for now it does what it’s told. Firing up Gigapan Stitch (Windows or Intel-based MAC), the first task is to tell it how many rows are in your panorama. This is an annoying little step as, after a week on Maui, I hadn’t a clue how many rows were in each panorama. No big deal, really, to go count them, but just a bit annoying. Also, the program can only handle JPG images, not RAW. Click “Save selection and stitch” and away it goes!! Depending on the number of images, their size, you computer’s processor, RAM, and any other sundry factors, you stitch will take a while to complete. The program is fairly swift on my computer for the example above, taking approximately ten minutes to stitch together 18MP images. Of my three test shots, one, from Haleakala National Park at sunrise currently refuses to stitch right-side-up. I am not sure why because the preview image, when the rows are all laid out before stitching, shows it right-side-up. After finishing the stitch, you can review it and then it’s time to upload to the website. The Website To make the panoramas work, with their millions and millions of pixels, takes uploading them to gigapan.org. Currently there is not another option with the software, other than uploading to gigapan.org to be able to share the images with others. Yes, you could use other stitching software and save as you wish. The panorama photos, once uploaded, can also be viewed with Google Earth. An example of the photo being stitched above can be found here. Another example of the Napili Kai Beach Resort can be found here. Conclusion The unit is a lot of fun and can give some amazing results. If you look at both examples I linked to above, you will notice the photo at the resort can use a lot of work. As you can image, anything moving between shots stands a chance of being cut off or copied twice. Things like waves at the beach, people, animals or fast moving clouds. I was only able to use the Gigapan for a few days on this trip before returning it to BorrowLenses.com (thanks again for the lend!). Since that time I’ve been noticing excellent places to shoot around town and have been scheming how to justify the $900USD sticker price to purchase one. They have some very cool applications for cityscapes, landscapes and creating 360 degree images for real estate. It is a piece of hardware I hope to own one day, once they update the software a bit. - U.S. Air Force begins migrating 600,000 systems to Windows 7Filed under: Windows, Microsoft Plenty of business and agencies won't be migrating to Windows 7 any time soon. Part of the problem is that a good number of those pesky old apps require Internet Explorer 6, though Unibrows may soon offer a solution for that particular stumbling block. The U.S. Air Force, however, is ready to forge ahead. According to Defense Systems, the USAF plans to have all of their 600,000 systems upgraded to Windows 7 by December of next year. "It's a daunting task," said Air Force CI, Lt. Gen. William Lord. Also daunting: trimming the number of applications running on the USAF network from 19,000 to 10,000 without inciting an end user revolt. The USAF migration is a big win for Microsoft as it could certainly encourage others to migrate to Windows 7. When reached for comment about the upgrade, Maverick responded, "This could be complicated. You know on the first one I crashed and burned." Yes, yes, I know Maverick was a Navy pilot, but who can resist a good Top Gun reference?U.S. Air Force begins migrating 600,000 systems to Windows 7 originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. - Evernote passes 5 million usersFiled under: Productivity Evernote has announced that it has reached an important milestone, just passing 5 million users. Also, the latest million users were added in only 83 days, whereas the first million were gathered in a whopping 446 days. As you can see from the graph above, each subsequent million has been added in shorter and shorter periods of time. Evernote has also broken some more records in recent days, starting with the 22,130 users that signed up today and made it cross the 5 million mark. It's also seen the most ever Windows, Android and BlackBerry users in one day and the highest daily revenue from Evernote Premium subscriptions. Do keep in mind though that the user numbers probably refer to all the users that have ever signed up for an Evernote account and not the number of people actively using the service every day. Still, all of these are nice accomplishments and things to be expected of a successful startup such as Evernote.Evernote passes 5 million users originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 19:30:00 EST. - Bing's new Facebook-powered social search features go liveFiled under: Microsoft, Search The continued integration between Bing and Facebook, which we originally covered a couple of weeks ago, has now gone live -- at least for US users. Now, if you are logged into Facebook, your Bing search results will be 'socially tailored' -- i.e. if a friend has liked a website, it will be at the top of your search results. Profiles will also appear if you search for names. LiveSide is reporting that you can use an 'American' URL -- http://www.bing.com/?mkt=en-us -- to try it out, but it didn't seem to work for me. Try as I might, I couldn't get my friends' faces to pop up next to popular search results -- so either it's not enabled for everyone, or I just don't have enough friends. Incidentally, you can block Bing from interacting with your Facebook -- though why I have to opt out, rather than opt in... - Twitter Is Now Worth About As Much As The New York Times (NYT)Here's a stat that shows the ascent of one form of media (Twitter) and the decline of another (print media). Twitter's common stock now trades at a roughly $1.6 billion valuation, TechCrunch reported last week. That's more than the New York Times' market capitalization, which is about $1.1 billion today. Though the NYTCo's enterprise value is $1.8 billion, so Twitter has a little way to go before it leads there. Twitter's next funding round could possibly value the company in the $2 billion to $3 billion range, though that would likely be the valuation of preferred shares, not common stock. - Evernote 4 for Windows is a complete overhaul of the popular note appFiled under: Utilities, Windows, Productivity Evernote, a popular app for capturing and editing notes, just hit version 4 of its Windows client. Evernote 4 features a completely redesigned user interface and a much faster experience built on native code. It reportedly starts 5 times faster than Evernote 3.5, and only uses half the memory. The Evernote team admitted to having issues with blurry type in version 3.5, so they've fixed that, too. As if that weren't enough to be excited about, Evernote 4 adds brand new features that make clipping and editing easier. You can now create a new clip from within IE, Outlook or Firefox without leaving your current app, and clipping emails in Outlook has been vastly improved. If you've had problems with Evernote losing your text styling when clipping from web pages and email messages in the past, those problems fixed in Evernote 4. Editing clips has also been improved with more text formatting options -- tables and bullets now work within clips. If you're a Windows 7 user, Evernote has also added some features just for you. It works with Windows 7's Jump Lists, so you can pin it to your task bar and perform some Evernote actions without even having the app running. It also uses Windows 7's location features to automatically geotag notes, if that's something you find useful. All in all, Evernote has done pretty well by the users of their most popular client (that's right, Evernote has more Windows users than Mac users at this point). If you've passed up previous Windows versions of Evernote due to lack of polish, Evernote 4 is a good reason to take a second look. - Blog Post: Get the REAL Microsoft Project Server!I have been following the activities of several competitors on the various digital channels for the past few months and I find it an honor to see how competitors are mimicking our product names, messaging and positioning to sell a product clearly different from ours… On one hand it’s always a good sign to see copycats and people mimicking a leader, but on the other hand I am worried that customers get confused and abused with a brand that is not Microsoft and potentially a product of lesser value that does not meet their business needs. Similar to politics it’s interesting to see competitors make inaccurate statements and for instance compare their offer against an older version (yes 2007 is “passe” and 2010 is OUT) or when they compare their server/online offering to our desktop product, so easy and cheap but so wrong…I am hopeful that in this day and digital age customers will hopefully find out the truth. So watch out for vendors using “EPM”, “Project Server”, etc… and do a thorough evaluation before signing the check! To sum it all, get the real Microsoft Project Server and Microsoft Project or at least look at our latest stack before making a purchase decision. We are transparent and offer free trial, so go to http://www.microsoft.com/project for the product information you need! Happy purchase decision

- Docs for Facebook adds full text document search, PDF support, user templates, and bulk uploadsFiled under: Office, Productivity, Web services, Microsoft, Social Software, Web, Facebook Docs for Facebook is the Microsoft-made online document sharing and editing suite that launched as a lead partner of Facebook's Instant Personalization feature. (And it has a killer domain name: Docs.com.) Today, it's gotten a nice round of updates. First off, full text document search is now available. To address the possibility of having a bazillion results show up for more generic terms, they're using a bit of Facebook-powered social mojo. As well as sorting results by relevance, Docs will also sort by other criteria such as your (Facebook) relationship to the author and the number of "likes" that each document has received. The search results page has also been redesigned, and the performance of search suggestions has improved. Next up is PDF support. You can now upload PDFs to Docs.com, which are then viewable online via an integrated Silverlight-based viewer. And just like all other file types on Facebook Docs, these are shareable with your Facebook friends. Also new is the fact that any document can now become a user-generated template. There's just an option that you need to turn on, and viewers of a specific document can make it into a template for themselves. Last, but definitely not least, Docs finally has a drag-and-drop bulk upload tool. For it to work, though, you're going to need Silverlight 4 or newer installed.Docs for Facebook adds full text document search, PDF support, user templates, and bulk uploads originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 17:30:00 EST.
